rclone backup · last updated 16 October 2026

rclone backup is a personal backup tool used only by its owner. This page explains what Google user data it accesses and what it does with it.

Data the app accesses

With the owner's permission, the app uses the Google Drive API (scope https://www.googleapis.com/auth/drive) to list, upload, update and move to trash files in the owner's Google Drive. It does not request access to Gmail, contacts, calendar or any other Google service.

How the data is used

The only use is backup: once a day, files from the owner's own computer are copied into a backup folder in the owner's own Drive, and files that were deleted on the computer are moved to Drive's trash so the backup matches. The app does not read, analyse or change any other files in the Drive.

Storage and sharing

The sign-in credential (OAuth token) is stored only on the owner's computer, in rclone's private configuration file. No Google user data is sent to any server other than Google's. Nothing is sold, shared with third parties, used for advertising, or used to train AI models. The app has no analytics, tracking or cookies.

Retention and deletion

Backed-up files stay in the owner's Drive until the owner deletes them. To revoke the app's access at any time, remove "rclone backup" at myaccount.google.com/connections and delete the local rclone configuration.

Google API Services User Data Policy

The app's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
